The Real Reason for the Season rejected by Chicago city officials

Got to love Chicago's celebration of tolerance and diversity. The Chicago Tribune reports the local government just imposed its religion (of secularism) on the rest of Chicago by demanding that promotions for the new movie The Nativity Story could not be advertised alongside other merchants at the annual Christmas festival in Daley Plaza this year.

As Focus on the Family reports, “Cindy Gatziolis, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Mayor’s Office of Special Events, said having a Christmas movie as a sponsor might offend some people.” How about asking yourself BIG BROTHER if banning that Christmas movie might offend a lot more people.

“Having a Christmas movie as a sponsor might offend some people.” Excuse me? Let me get this right: a Christmas movie is inappropriate at Christmas time; and an open expression of Christianity is not being tolerated while other religions are allowed to express themselves? Sounds a little discriminatory, doesn’t it?

PLEASE NOTE (by the order of the police of political correctness):
“The celebration of tolerance and diversity in Chicago, Illinois extends to all applicants.” *

* Christians need not apply.

“Having a Christmas movie as a sponsor might offend some people.” What duplicity! The possibility of potentially offending some people didn’t stop the city from hosting the recent Gay Games. Would more people be offended that foreigners with HIV were temporarily allowed into the country in order to attend the Gay Olympics, or would more people be offended that a Christmas movie be promoted at Christmas-time? Apparently, the severity only applies when the government is the party offended.

Gatziolis goes on to say,“(It would) be insensitive to the many people of different faiths who come to enjoy the market for its food and unique gifts.” Give me a break. Just admit your government office is hostile to Christianity. Just admit your hostility and intolerance will offend much more people than those on the militant secular left who are offended when they are reminded of the real reason for this holiday season – namely, the celebration of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth.

About the Election: We should quit pointing fingers and start looking in the mirror!

This post is in response to Dr. Dobson’s letter he posted on Citizenlink yesterday.

-------------------

While it was indeed tragic Christians stayed at home and let even worse politicians take control of Congress, we now need to assess the situation and find real answers to how this could have happened.

On one hand, there’s a side of me that says that Dr. Dobson’s letter was SPOT ON! Similar to the reason offered in the letter by Dr. Ken Hutcherson, let me first offer an explanation in this slightly self-righteous fashion:

“When the party that purports to represent socially-conservative values does not aggressive represent those values enough once in office, then there is a tendency for the social-conservative base that put them in power to become disenfranchised and stay at home come election time.”

Stated more simply, the problem for the loss in this fall’s election could be leveled at moderate Republicans usurping control of the party at large.

On the other hand, I think it is healthier – and more accurate – for us who call ourselves followers of Christ to consider whether we (the Church) are mainly to blame for the losses in the 2006 Elections.

Let the facts speak for themselves: According to figures from Focus on the Family, somewhere between 30 to 49 million self-identified Christians failed to take the time to vote in the 2000 Presidential election. The numbers were slightly better in 2004, but obviously far worse this year. I humbly ask, “When are we going to stop blaming other people – in this case, the party of the Republicans (namely, those who make up the moderate, non-social-conservative wing) – and start asking ourselves whether we are the true guilty party?” We can make whatever party better – whether Democrat or Republican, or both -- if we simply get equipped, engage, and be change agents.

Moreover, indiscretion at the top of the evangelical kingdom exposed Ted Haggard as a fraud just before the election. Sure, we can blame the other side for possibly holding the story for political reasons until right before our nation voted. But it wasn’t as if they made up this “November surprise”. The real problem was with us. We did not hold our leadership accountable. We are to blame for this blow-up and subsequent fall-out. I don’t think it was a coincidence that the last two Focus broadcasts right before this story broke centered on our need for repentance and humility. One thing is clear after taking a close look at history: if we don’t humble ourselves, God will do it for us!

Our prideful attitudes also led us into a willful and epidemic state of ignorance and complacency concerning issues that really matter to God. Christians need to admit, for example, that we are woefully ignorant regarding vital disciplines of a Christian worldview such as with the basics understanding of politics. We saw it manifested by misapplied righteous indignation towards poor Republican leadership in Washington. We should have taught bad Republicans a lesson in the spring primaries by replacing them with good Republicans. Instead, we failed to recognize the right time to discipline. We waited too long and resorted to teach them a lesson in the fall general elections. This misapplied anger hurt us more than them, by allowing even worse (liberal) leadership to take their place. The liberals are now laughing all the way to Congress by our miscues.

Don’t get me wrong; I commend those in the church, like Dobson, who worked tirelessly on behalf of the unborn, marriage, and other transcendent values that made this country so great. However, let us not forget: we are not just individuals, but a community of faith. We have failed. We must regroup. We must repent.

This election is just the latest sign of not only our times, but of our corporate hearts in the church today. We, in the American church today, have demonstrated that we are a stiffed-neck people who constantly worship the gods of convenience, worldly success, and the right to be entertained, more then we do in defending and promoting right things! We know more about our stock-market portfolios, the latest car models, and the latest hot pop-culture trends, than we do about learning the important points of life that Jesus stressed to us. We need to repent – that is, have a major change of mind and a major change of heart! We need to wake up and start doing what pleases the Lord! (Parenthetically speaking, this includes me! So the next time you see me doing something that goes against Scripture, love me enough to tell me so! Hopefully, I will appreciate you for it.) We who believe in Truth must spread this Truth to others. The Truth will set us free and bring forth life to all who believe in it. Bringing more of heaven to earth will only happen when we quit blaming others and start looking in the mirror!

In summary, I believe the problem with last Tuesday’s election wasn’t with a failure within the leadership of the Republican Party, as it was with a failure within the leadership of the Church. We must admit our mistakes and learn from them, so we don’t shoot ourselves again in the foot as we did last Tuesday. Until we Christians turn from our lives of idolatry and self-centeredness, and begin to lead lives of true sacrifice for the cause of righteousness, this world will continue to slide into the abode of darkness with many casualties along the way.

Politics 101: Top 10 Reasons Why Values Voters Should Vote This Election (11-07-06)

A lot is at stake in this election. Here’s my rundown on the Top 10 Reasons why values voters, in good conscience, cannot sit this one out.

1.) Staying home in this fall’s general elections would not punish Republican leadership as much as it would punish us by allowing liberals to take over Congress. As David Barton said, “who will we actually punish by staying home? Will it be the House and Senate – or will it be our families, our friends and even our nation because we didn’t get out to vote for the candidate who would best represent our values?”

2.) Anger misapplied can lead to more problems. My anger towards bad Republicans should not be taken out during the fall general elections where a Republican faces a Democrat. This will only lead to a bad Republican being replaced with an even worse Democrat. Under the current allegiance to national party platforms, a not-so-perfect Republican – and might I add, a not-so-perfect Republican-controlled Congress, is FAR BETTER than a far-worse Democrat – and might I also add, a far-worse and radically-liberal-leaning Democratic-controlled Congress. If I want to exercise my anger properly, it needs to be directed towards bad Republicans during primary elections where my efforts can focus on replacing bad Republicans with good Republicans.

3.) Whatever party wins the most seats this November will decide which party controls the House and the Senate. And the party that controls each of these respective legislative bodies will determine the laws of our land! Imagine a House of Representatives lead by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. They don’t come more liberal than she does! It is people of her ideological perspective, for instance, who believe animals have the same value as humans. This type of upside-down thinking prevented the use of DDT in stopping the spread of malaria in Africa. Why? Because it would kill birds. Hmmmm…kill mosquitoes along with birds, or allow millions of human beings to die. This should not be a difficult moral dilemma. But to liberals it is! Well, at least we know what species they want to win in the evolutionary struggle for life in Africa!

4.) The party who wins the Senate will determine the type of justice(s) nominated to the United States Supreme Court. One, or possibly two more justices are expected to retire in the next two years. If you want to see judges on the bench who respect the Constitution, that means we need to be sure to sustain a Republican majority in the Senate. Why? Because a Republican majority in the Senate will make it possible for another pro-life, pro-family justice to be appointed to the Supreme Court. A change in power would lead to a change in who runs the Senate Judiciary Committee. Ultraliberals like (Sens.) Patrick Leahy, (D-Vt.), Ted Kennedy, (D-Mass.), and Chuck Schumer, (D-N.Y.) will decide the type of judges the president can get confirmed. And that tragic scenario will more than guarantee no pro-life or pro-family justice will be allowed to be appointed.

5.) If we can sustain the Republican majority in Congress, President Bush has a chance to get one more conservative justice through the Senate and onto the U.S. Supreme Court. And that would mean we could finally see the end to legalized abortion in this country! Watch this short video that explains the importance of protecting life. Watch here to see how some young Christians are praying God will transform the highest court in order to end the legalized murder of the unborn. This point cannot be emphasized enough. We are one Supreme Court justice away from stopping the holocaust! This includes the barbaric act known as partial-birth abortion. Watch this video, which explains what is involved with this “procedure.” (WARNING: While this video does not show an actual partial-birth abortion, it is demonstrably graphic and will hopefully make you righteously indignant and responsive to this injustice plaguing our country.) As pointed out by Phil Burress, President of Citizens for Community Values, “It is not what one says about abortion that matters; rather, it is what one does to save the unborn that truly matters.” download Windows Media Player here

6.) The institution of marriage will be endanger of being redefined out of existence if the liberals win this election. Just this Wednesday, in a closely watched case, New Jersey's Supreme Court declared the state has to give same-sex couples the same rights and benefits as those granted to married heterosexuals. Marriage exists in society for the expressed purposes of producing and raising children. And it has always been the best vehicle for doing so. Considering one of government’s main responsibilities is to insure future generations, the promotion and safekeeping of marriage, therefore, has always been in the government’s best interest. Tragically, for over three decades, marriage has been under attack by the very institution whose job it is to safeguard its survival and well-being.

7.) Facing the Real Threats To Our Nation’s Security. The Republicans have been much more courageous in fighting our enemies abroad. In contrast, the Democrats – like Chamberlain with Hitler – are more interested in appeasement and ignoring the real threats and aggression from our enemy. Here’s an interesting online video regarding the war on Islamo-fascism that should put a healthy dose of fear in your heart. Here’s also the latest news coming out of Iran where they are testing new weapons like it’s the Fourth of July (that is, without the independence and liberty stuff). And here’s a taste of what the liberals are thinking regarding our troops as articulated by John Kerry:

“You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq.”

8.) We need to vote to show we will not be told how to think by the mainstream media. Someone once said (and I paraphrase), “if you want to convince people of a lie, make it big enough, and you might just convince them it’s true.” Well, that’s exactly what the liberal, mainstream media has been trying to do ever since the values voters came out in such numbers two years ago. They have tried to convince us we don’t care anymore, and that we are not going to the polls this November. They haven’t convinced me! Have they convinced you? If we wake up our still-sleeping fellow values voters in the next few days, it can be another watershed moment for the future of this country. For one, it will spell the end to the mainstream media, as we know it. Enough people will finally realize that the MSM has lost their credibility with the public and will turn to new forms of media for their news and information.

9.) The Threat To Our Religious Liberty. In Canada recently, it has become a crime to preach on the radio certain passages of Scripture condemning homosexuality. Similar so-called “hate crimes” legislation was close once again of passing through Congress here in the U.S. thanks to persistent leadership by those in the Democratic Party. Let’s not miss the fact that it was mostly the Dems who also stalled the progress of The Public Expression of Religion Act (PERA), which would have taken away the financial incentive from groups like the ACLU to sue schools and local governments in cases involving religious expression.

10.) And last, but surely not lease, other Social Issues round out the top 10. If the liberals take over Congress, abstinence education will certainly be removed from our schools. For the last six years, abstinence education has shown to work, despite the liberal pundits cries it wouldn’t. As reported by Focus on the Family Action, “By just a 3-vote margin, the Senate this term defeated an anti-abstinence education bill that would have made condoms the sole focus of sex education in public schools.” If value voters stay home this election, sex among minors will surely increase in our land. One more issue worth noting is Human cloning. If the liberals take Congress, this mad form of science will certainly be on the fast track to becoming legal. Learn the basics of stem-cell research by watching this short video.

In my opinion, this will be the most significant election I can remember. A lot of issues that are close to the heart of God will be determined in the next few years based on who wins power come November 7th. My fear is most value voters (i.e. Christians) don't even know the reality of this watershed moment in American history. We all want to do the right thing, but sadly, many of us are influenced in ways (mainly through the mainstream media) that hinder or discourage us from being informed, involved, or engaged enough in the political process to create real change. But then, that's the goal of the forces of darkness. The sleepy giant (the Church) may still be asleep as Election Day fast approaches. This Sunday at churches around the country we will find the last opportunity for synergism. We must wake up fellow values voters before the wolves get in and take control of our house!

NOTABLE QUOTABLES:

While speaking on the subject of democracies, Winston Churchill once said, “It’s the worst form of government ever invented except for all the others that have ever been tried.”

"When the people fear government, that's tyranny; when the government fears the people, that's liberty." – Thomas Jefferson

ACTION STEPS:

  1. Make a friendly call to every values voter in your cell phone and encourage him or her to think of the alternative and then to vote their conscience.

Politics 101: Top 10 Differences between Republicans & Democrats

To help you make a more informed decision come November 7th, I’ve listed what I find to be the Top 10 Differences between Republicans and Democrats. While there are exceptions in some cases, particularly at the local level, differences are much more apparent as you move up to the national level, where allegiance to each respective national party platform is more emphasized.

And without further ado…The Top 10 Differences between Republicans & Democrats:

1.) Abortion. No other issue differentiates these two parties more than does the issue of abortion. While this hasn’t always been the case, the Republican Party today is the only of these two parties that represents the pro-life cause at the national level. The vote tally on the only abortion-related major piece of legislation the U.S. Congress faced in the last five years clearly shows this difference. (51 Republicans and 6 Democrats supported the rights of parents to be notified in cases where one of their minor children sought an abortion across state lines. Whereas, 4 Republicans and 37 Democrats voted against the parents’ right to be notified.) Democrats solid unity related to the ethic of abortion-on-demand also differentiates the party from most Americans according to a Wirthlin poll released early in 2003 which found that “68 percent of respondents favored ‘restoring legal protection for unborn children.’” [i] “Abortion is now the glue that holds the Democratic Party together,” writes Peggy Noonan.[ii] In his article entitled, “DNC Delegates Out of Step with Average Person,” Keith Peters writes, “Three-fourths [of the delegates at the 2004 Democratic National Convention] believe abortion should be available to those who want it, compared to 49 percent of Democrats and 34 percent of all voters.”[iii] These statistics clearly show just how radical the Democratic national party has gotten. While not emphasized in the MSM, their radical abortion agenda can be demonstrated as well with their nominations and appointments of pro-abortion judges to the Supreme Court, or conversely, with their obstruction tactics when pro-life justices are considered by conservative presidents.

2.) Marriage. For millennia, the institution of marriage has been the basic building block of any civilized society. Marriage has always been defined as the public-supported exclusive union of one man and one woman. Unfortunately, this vital societal unit has been losing an increasing amount of government support through such initiatives as the marriage penalty tax and no-fault divorce laws. While the marriage penalty tax finally ended once George W. Bush took office, major threats still loom large for this vital institution. The National Democratic Party continues to vigorously wage an aggressive assault on marriage as it aims, in recent years, to extend public acknowledgement and support for unions of same-sex couples. The blocking of the Marriage Protection Amendment from full Senate consideration and vote by a significant number of Democratic Senators this year and in 2004 is one example of the hostility shown by the left towards traditional marriage. This vital social institution – as it has been defined for 5,000 years – will most assuredly be rendered meaningless if so-called same-sex marriage becomes legalized.

3.) The War. Like Chamberlain with Hitler, the Democrats naively believe we can negotiate and reason with these brutal regimes as they support the United Nation’s initiatives of appeasement. Our enemy constantly ignores United Nations’ resolutions demonstrating the U.N. is “all bark and no bite.” Consequently, in a dramatic change in Middle East policy, six other Arab countries just announced today plans to go nuclear. With the exception of just a few, the Democrats have shown a major lack of leadership at standing up to the aggression of our enemies around the world. Moreover, the Dems and their fellow lefties in the MSM continue to refer to the war as “a war on terrorism.” This is as much a war against terrorism as World War II was a war against kamikazes and blitzkriegs. Terrorism, kamikazes and blitzkriegs are simply tactics of warfare. WWII was actually a war against Nazism, Fascism, and Imperialism. The left refuses to call our enemy by name. How can you win a war, if you fail to identify your enemy? Our war today is against radical, militant, Islamo-fascists. The left in this country also deludes themselves – I think out of fear – into thinking that this is simply an ideological war. They are afraid to admit this is also a religious war in which they have to choose sides. What was on the lips of the kidnappers of Jill Carrol right after they murdered her colleague and took her away? “Jihad! Jihad!” (Which means “holy war.”) What was proclaimed from the mouths of the terrorist seconds before United 93 slammed into that Pennsylvanian field? “Allah is the greatest!” (If they don’t believe me, they can read the transcript for themselves as retrieved from the flight data recorder.) As aptly stated by U.S. Lt. General McInerny, “The only way America can lose the war in Iraq is if the Iraqi insurgents can break the will of the people (of the United States).” We need to have the right people in office who not only know how to successfully lead the fight, but who also actually have the will to win this war! I think Tony Blair said it best when he turned and looked RIGHT into the cameras and said, “They know why they’re fighting. Do we?”

4.) Taxes and helping the poor. Democratic public fiscal policy clearly put more hope in government programs meeting the needs than non-profit, charitable groups. They advocated obligatory giving through higher taxes. The money collected from taxes then goes to public employees who are obligated to meet these needs. Republicans, in contrast, believe public-run social welfare programs are inefficient and more easily corrupted. Instead, conservatives advocate for lower taxes, which will free up more money for taxpayers to cheerfully give to non-profit organizations (i.e. religious bodies & charities), which exist to meet specific needs of society. Republicans believe these organizations will do a better job of handling these social issues. Case in point: Katrina disaster relief. The church and other non-profit organizations – and even for-profit corporations – outperformed government programs. As one reviewer of Marvin Olasky’s new book, “The Politics of Disaster: Katrina, Big Government, and A New Strategy for Future Crises” summarized:

“Faith-based organizations, primarily the Salvation Army, the Southern Baptist Convention and local churches, by far outperformed any government agency. The absence of a paperocracy allowed these organizations to move quickly and decisively. He looks also at corporations such as Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Fed-Ex which played an integral role in relief efforts and which put the government to shame with their speed, preparedness and organization.”

5.) Judicial Philosophy. The judicial branch of our government has been given power to interpret laws created by the legislative branch in order to insure those laws preserve the rights laid out in the U.S. Constitution. As a measure of checks and balances, the legislative branch has been given the power under the Constitution to appoint those that preside in the judicial branch. Republicans appoint many judges who hold to a judicial philosophy known as strict constructionism, or constitutionalism. They believe the Constitution has a specific meaning based on the intent of its authors. Our goal should therefore be to preserve these rights by determining the Constitution’s true meaning instead of infusing our meaning into the text. Consequently, the same rights first spelled out in the Bill of Rights centuries ago would be the same rights guaranteed today. Democrats, by contrast, consistently appoint judges who believe the Constitution is a “living, breathing document” and can therefore mean whatever they want it to mean. They are often referred to as “activists judges” who, in effect, legislate (or make laws) from the bench – a power only delegated to the legislative branch. Courts comprised mainly of liberal activist judges have resulted in some of the most outlandish rulings in the history of our country, as noted by historian David Barton:

Kelo v. City of New London – a 5-4 decision regarding eminent domain, in which the Court ruled that it was acceptable to take private property for the purpose of economic development; Lawrence v. Texas – a 6-3 decision in which the Court struck down the prohibition of homosexual sodomy; McCreary v. ACLU – a 5-4 decision ruling that a display of the 10 Commandments in courthouses violated the Establishment Clause; Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe – a 6-3 decision stating that student-led prayers at football games were unconstitutional; Lee v. Weisman – a 5-4 decision where it was determined that clergy-led prayers at graduation ceremonies were unconstitutional; Romer v. Evans – in a 6-3 decision, the Court said that Colorado’s amendment to prevent special rights for homosexual was unconstitutional; Planned Parenthood v. Casey – a 5-4 decision that reaffirmed the Roe decision; Stenberg v. Carhart – a 5-4 decision found that Nebraska’s statute criminalizing partial-birth abortion was illegal (We may already have the needed five votes to overturn this in [this] year’s federal challenge to partial-birth abortion – Gonzales v. Carhart.); and perhaps what is arguably the most offensive decision of them all – Roe v. Wade.

6.) Religious Liberty. The Democrats were successful at stifling legislation that would de-fund the American Civil Liberties Union (A.C.L.U.) so they could no longer intimidate local governments and schools into relinquishing the free religious expression of its citizens by threats of overburdening lawsuits. (Now you Christians, don’t you worry if the Democrats take power. You’ll still hear “God-talk” coming from the Dems as they pander for your vote while building towards the next Presidential election. Expect to hear more religious words sprinkled in the rhetoric of politicians like Hillary Clinton as she subtly persuades you into becoming more “open-minded and tolerant” towards the old-time liberal religions of choice, same-sex marriage, and amnesty.)

7.) Stem Cell Research. Democrats and their cohorts in crime in the MSM consistently fail to point out the significant differences between Embryonic Stem Cell Research and Adult Stem Cell Research. Embryonic Stem Cell Research takes a life in order to try to help another (with no success either now or anywhere on the horizon). In contrast, Adult Stem Cell Research takes existing stem cells from adult humans (i.e. umbilical cords) and uses them in successful current treatments of human diseases. Learn the basics of Stem Cell research by watching this short video. Pushes towards public funding of Embryonic Stem Cell Research are simply the early steps needed for the eventual push for society’s acceptance of human cloning. While both parties are guilty of bending the knee to the biomedical/cloning lobby, the only considerable numbers that happen to be part of the stalwart pro-life faithful reside almost exclusively within the Republican Party. download Windows Media Player here

8.) Border Security/Immigration. The Democrats advocate more for open-borders than Republicans do. It is not a secret in Washington that huge, gapping holes in our border security have allowed known terrorists to enter into our homeland. While many Republicans refer to those who improperly cross the U.S. border as “illegal aliens,” Democrats regularly refer to them by a more politically savory term of “undocumented workers.” While Bush has acted more like a Democrat on this issue, much more Republicans than Democrats push for stricter border enforcement of existing immigration laws. To attract values voters, liberals on the left of the aisle have even begun using religious language more as they advocate for amnesty. They argue, “Isn’t the Christian thing to do, not to turn away these people? Doesn’t the bible say that you should provide for the needs of aliens? My answer would be something like this:

“Let me get this right. Are you advocating making our country a theocracy? What about separation of church and state? Why impose your Christian beliefs into our pluralistic government system? If someone believes in the Christian way, then they should assemble their churches and pursue the teachings of Jesus. However, I know many people who reject the teachings of Jesus. Should you have the right to impose your beliefs on others who don’t share your beliefs? Government, on the other hand, has a responsibility to protect its citizens, whereas people of religious faiths have a duty to carry out their religious imperatives.”

9.) Indecency in the Media. The Federal Communications Act was passed in 1934 by a Democratic Congress and signed by a Democratic President--Franklin D. Roosevelt. That law gave the federal government the power--and the duty--to police the public airwaves. While credit mainly goes to the Democrats for its origination, the Democrats today are a party for the free expression of speech, no matter the cost, and no matter the degree of obscenity. Republicans are the party today who are more in support of enforcement and strengthening indecency standards. We seen it most recent in the Republican-controlled House, which passed this year the Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act, which raised tenfold the maximum fine that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) can levy against broadcasters who air indecent material — bringing it to $325,000 per infraction, with a maximum cap of $3 million for a single program.

10.) A Country Divided or a Country United? While the Democrats have played the role of obstructionist for six years under President Bush, their divisive form of politics will even grow stronger if they capture control of Congress this election year. Whether it is with our efforts at defeating Islamo-Fascism, or tackling domestic issues, our leadership in this country needs to work together. If the Democrats win on November 7th, the country will become even more divided with a Democratic-controlled Legislative Branch and a Republican Executive Branch. In fact, if the Democrats gain control of Congress, they have vowed to try to impeach President Bush! I’m afraid gridlock will rule the day in Washington like we never seen it before if the Dems win on November 7th.
